General Biology III is the final course in our three-quarter General Biology sequence, designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation for advanced studies in environmental science and the natural sciences. During spring quarter, we will delve into the intricate aspects of animal structure and function, focusing on critical topics such as water and electrolyte balance, nutrition, gas exchange, circulation, and the various organ systems of animals. We will also explore the processes of animal reproduction and development, gaining insights into the life cycles of diverse species. In addition, this course will examine population dynamics and community ecosystems, enhancing our understanding of evolutionary patterns, ecological interactions, and the rich diversity of animal life. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities, students will engage with the complex relationships that shape our natural world, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living organisms.

The General Biology sequence is intended to help students fulfill general biology requirements necessary for advanced work in the natural sciences, particularly for those who will focus their studies through part-time offerings to earn a degree or certificate in the sciences. The program will use a hybrid model of instruction with online learning (asynchronous and synchronous work) and weekly, in-person laboratory or field sessions.

For most of the work, we will rely heavily on Canvas for communication, accessing materials and assignments. In-person laboratory sessions will include learning of basic microbiology techniques, microscopy, DNA restriction digestions, gel electrophoresis, plant dissections, and field biology techniques.

This is the third in a three-course series.
