Podcasting has transformed the way stories are told, blending elements of radio, film, journalism, and social media in an intimate and accessible medium. This 8-credit summer program explores both the cultural impact and hands-on production of podcasts. On the critical studies side, students will trace the evolution of podcasting over the past two decades, analyzing its relationship to traditional media, its role in shaping political and social movements, and its influence on public conversation. We will examine a range of formats, from investigative journalism to personal storytelling, and discuss how podcasting has redefined audience engagement and media consumption. On the production side, students will develop, pitch, and produce their own podcast pilot, gaining experience in scripting, interviewing, sound design, and editing. Through a combination of research, critique, and creative work, students will learn how to craft compelling narratives and distribute their projects via a class RSS feed. No prior experience is required—just an interest in storytelling, sound, and the evolving landscape of digital media.
