Taught By:
In this one quarter program we will explore the interrelationships between literature, typography and film. Writers have often thought about how the abstractions of language might best realize the concrete experience of seeing; typography, from the Renaissance to today's digital typography, realizes words as visual systems; cinema involves the interaction between word, image (and sound) in endlessly surprising ways. This class will involve readings in literature; history and design workshops in digital typography and vector drawing; and a film series to which students will be asked to respond ekphrastically (meaning - with detailed descriptions of precise visual elements) in writing.
