Master in Teaching (MiT) Program

This year (Quarters 2,3, and 4), the Master in Teaching (MiT) program will carry forward the foundational work from The Roots quarter (Quarter 1) and will weave the following five experiential strands into our work in classrooms, schools, communities, and program work: Community Teaching, Inquiry, Learning in Context, Praxis and Teaching when the World is on Fire.

In the Fall (Quarter 2) work begins at the end of August with a full-time Back to School Experience through which you will participate in: (i) the early lessons and classroom experiences designed to build trusting relationships between educators and students; (ii) any team building, school wide initiatives, professional development, and professional learning communities; and (iii)  a Menu of Actions assignment through which you will both begin to establish the linkages between your district, school, classroom have to families, communities, and politics. You will also begin to cull resources and attend to curriculum uses, materials, practices, learning opportunities, and instructional support available and practiced in schools.

At the end of September (and when classes officially begin at Evergreen), your full time in schools will shift to: 1) two days each week (Mondays and Fridays) of program work where you will engage in your endorsement area, Community Teaching, Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, and Adolescent Development (for secondary) and 2) three half-days (Tuesdays – Thursdays) of co-teaching work in a K-12 school each week, following the policies and protocols of each school district. In the Winter (Quarter 3), you will maintain the Monday and Friday program work schedule, while you gradually increase time and responsibility working in schools (T-Th, from half days to full days), you will also continue to develop your knowledge and skills in culturally responsive and community responsive planning, instruction, and assessment. In addition, you will develop the skills to do your own action research project on a question related to your teacher identity, teacher practice and relationships with families and communities. By Spring (Quarter 4), you will be working full days, Monday through Friday, in schools and meeting one afternoon/evening a week for a field seminar and sessions around your Inquiry, Action, and Equity Project.

Students who successfully complete the Fall quarter/Quarter 2 will earn credit in either Elementary or Secondary areas: 

• Elementary- Elementary Mathematics Praxis (2 credits); Elementary Literacy I Praxis (3 credits); Elementary Social Studies Praxis (2 credits); Community Teaching Seminar (2 credits); Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (1 credit); Field (6 credits).
• Secondary-Secondary Praxis (5 credits, based on endorsement area); Adolescent Development (2 credits); Community Teaching Seminar (2 credits); Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (1 credit); Field (6 credits).

• Elementary- Elementary Science Praxis (2 credits); Elementary Literacy II Praxis (3 credits); Community Teaching Seminar (2 credit); Inquiry, Equity & Action (1 credit); Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (1 credit); Culturally Responsive Differentiated Instruction (1 credit); Field (6 credits).
• Secondary-Secondary Praxis (5 credits, based on endorsement area); Community Teaching Seminar (2 credits); Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (1 credit); Inquiry, Equity & Action (1 credit); Culturally Responsive Classroom Management (1 credit); Field (6 credits).

Students who successfully complete the Spring 2 quarter/Quarter 4 will earn credit in:

• Field (full time student teaching) (13 credits)
• Community Teaching with Inquiry, Equity & Action Project & Field Seminar (3 credits)

During September 2022 - June 2023, we will follow the policies and protocols of each partner school district related to COVID-19 in regards to placements. Please be aware that in response to the global pandemic, K-12 policies and practices can shift and we will need to remain flexible and responsive.

Student who are enrolled in the MIT program will register in Fall (Quarter 2) and will be automatically registered for Winter (Quarter 3) and Spring (Quarter 4).

Technology needs: Students will need access to Zoom and Canvas. Additionally, students will need a video camera or use of their phone, and small tripod in order to film themselves teaching.
