This advanced-level course is available to upper-division students with previous art experience and a minimum of study in one printmaking technique. Over the quarter, students will have studio time to hone their technical skills and focus on producing a cohesive series of print editions that will ultimately contribute to their visual art portfolio. Areas of focus include (but are not limited to) mono printing, intaglio, relief, screen printing, and letterpress. Students should be prepared to work independently of technical demonstrations for any given printmaking process. Peer review and discussion are essential to this advanced work. Students will engage in independent artistic pursuits yet come together to share print work, research findings, and perspectives.
As a collaborative class, students will share their work, give and receive feedback, and engage in a mid-quarter and end-of-quarter critique to expand their critical observational skills and visual literacy. Students will lead with an independent agency of conceptual subject matter supported by research. This course prepares students with valuable qualitative and quantitative skills giving context to the work produced by reflective critical thinking.
