This course provides an intermediate understanding of material-based printmaking processes. Students will advance their understanding of traditional techniques applied to their choice of one of the following techniques: mono printing, etching, relief, or screen-printing. The objective is for the student to push the boundaries of traditional techniques within the chosen method by applying alternative process to achieve unpredictable outcomes. From this, the goal is to discover a method that can be reproduced in an edition of print work.
As a class community, students gain valuable qualitative and quantitative skills through the design process to achieve reflective modes of study in printmaking. Students will develop a context for their work through lab notes and critique.
Regularly scheduled in-person meetings will take place once a week. Working in a collaborative manner, students will be expected to share their work, give, and receive feedback during a critique, weeks 5 and 10, to expand their critical observational skills and vocabulary. Assignments are designed to support the beginner through the advanced student. Through in-person instructional demonstrations and supplemental video tutorials, students will be expected to take notes and work on assignments during the week. Students should be prepared to invest 6-8 hours a week to complete all projects outside of class sessions.
