This course provides an intermediate understanding of material-based printmaking processes. Students will transform their knowledge of introductory printmaking techniques applied to their choice of one of the following techniques: mono printing, etching, relief, or screen-printing. The objective is for the student to gain a steady measure of outcomes that result from planning and creating strong studio practices. Ink mixing, image registration, layer trapping, etc., are all ways that students will learn to build structured methodologies for improved technical skills.
As a collaborative class, students will share their work, give and receive feedback, engage during critique weeks 5 and 10, and expand their critical observational skills and visual literacy. Students will lead with an independent agency in the conceptual subject matter of their choice supported by research. Through lab notes and independent research, students gain valuable qualitative and quantitative skills from the design process that gives context to the work produced by reflective critical thinking.
In-person instruction, demonstrations, and supplemental video tutorials will support students with various learning modalities.
Regularly scheduled in-person meetings will occur weekly with the expectation that students will be available for regularly scheduled studio lab hours. Students can expect to invest 6-8 hours to complete all projects outside class sessions.
