In this introductory letterpress printing course, students will gain hands-on experience with typesetting and using a Vandercook proofing press. Letterpress printing involves arranging movable type and other elements on a press bed, inking them, and pressing them onto paper to create prints. Students will have the freedom to create original writing, which they will set in type and print.
This course covers the proper use of typesetting tools, type cases, and the Vandercook proofing press. From single-color prints to multi-color gradients, students will develop competency in registration, inking, and handling all letterpress materials and equipment. Additionally, students will learn about fonts and create an original hand-carved block to produce a large point broadside. To conclude, students will expand their critical observational skills and visual literacy through a final group critique and print trade.
The studio lab will be available for work outside of class sessions during the week. Assignment work may require an additional 6-8 hours.
