In this introductory printmaking course, students will gain hands-on experience with basic relief printing processes. Relief printing involves carving away negative space from a woodblock or rubber carving block, then inking and printing the surface onto paper. Students will have the freedom to create original designs, which they will transfer to their carving block.
This course covers the proper use of carving tools and printing presses. From single-color prints to multi-color reduction printing, students will develop competency in registration and handling of all relief printmaking materials and equipment. Additionally, students will undertake a research project to explore the process in depth, present and participate in regular design reviews, and expand their critical observational skills and visual literacy through a final group critique and print trade.
The studio lab will be available for work outside of class sessions during the week. Assignment work may require an additional 6-8 hours.
