This Student-Originated Study (SOS) program offers the opportunity for self-motivated students to create their own intermediate or advanced course of study in botany and herbarium-based research with the support of a peer group. This work may include a botany-related internship if the student has already identified an outside agency or organization and potential field supervisor for the internship. Students will work independently or in small groups to carry out in-depth research projects or study specific topics. We will meet weekly as a group to problem solve and support group members' work. Weekly meetings may also include seminar readings and discussion, along with workshops or support training. Interested students should submit a brief application to faculty (calabril@evergreen.edu) by the Friday of Week 9 at 5pm in Winter quarter and be ready to start projects and internships week 1 of the spring quarter.
Faculty will only consider responsible, self-motivated students who value collaborative learning and are enthusiastic about participating in a community of co-learners. Priority will be given to students with well-defined questions or objectives.
The application should include:
- transcript or list of prior college level coursework (course/program name, number of credits earned)
- description of the project and/or internship they want to develop
- examples of your ability to meet the six expectations of an evergreen undergraduate (https://www.evergreen.edu/offices-services/academic-affairs/six-expectations)
- two academic references that speak to your demonstrated capacity to work productively and respectfully with others and your ability to work independently to meet defined learning objectives
