Taught By:
Picture Japan in your mind’s eye. What do you see? How do your visions compare with stereotypical images of Japanese culture? This course draws on concepts of sight and seeing to explore un/familiar visions of Japan across time and space. Together we will consider how the trope of seeing—and being seen—has been evoked to create tension and mystery to captivate audiences of the literary and visual arts within and beyond the borders of Japan.
