Remix – transforming appropriated source material through editing – is a powerful technique for communicating audiovisually. For many decades, film and video creators across the spectrum from high to low art and professional to amateur have deployed it in myriad ways, often as a tool for argumentation and critique. In this program, you will study the diverse forms of video remix and their online (or earlier) contexts, ranging from expository pieces (the “video essay” / videographic criticism) to experimental artworks to popular YouTube formats (fan music videos, fake trailers, political spoofs, supercuts, etc.). And you will conceptually develop and execute your own video remix project, drawing upon the critical understanding of form, genre, and communicative strategies that you have gained.

Program activities include one day of lecture, screening, and seminar on assigned readings and one day of technical workshops and studio time. Primary technical instruction will be in Adobe Premiere Pro, an industry standard video editing program. Video Remix welcomes beginners and students with any level of experience; more advanced students may learn and incorporate more advanced editing techniques. You will have access to computer workstations in the Multimedia Lab, or if working on a personal computer can obtain a free license to Adobe Creative Cloud through Evergreen. Come explore the range, rhetorics, and reach of remix as a cultural phenomenon!
