At Evergreen Tacoma, students may enter the program entitled: With Liberty and Justice for Whom: Early Childhood Education (ECE). This program is based on a curriculum that features dual languages and culturally responsive education that prepares students to attain BA degrees in Liberal Arts with emphasis in early childhood education.
In fall, students will learn about building relationships with families and community in early childhood education. They will develop a language plan, selecting options for organize a broad usage of languages that respond to the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of children and their families and plan curriculum accordingly.
During the winter quarter, students will explore the concept of tri-literacy which includes enculturation, bi-culturation, and acculturation. They will examine the benefits of arts-based curricula in the development of imagination and cognitive language and communication, and social skills. They will build competencies for understanding the foundation of child development, prenatal to early adolescence; and observe and document physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of children, reflective of cross cultural and global perspectives.
During the spring quarter, students are provided a multicultural approach to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). They will take a strengths-based approach to Intra-Afrikan Early Childhood Education, including Latino, African, African American, African Caribbean and Indigenous experiences. They will examine the principles and theories of promoting social wellness and competence in young children and creating responsive and nurturing learning environments.
