As one of the intermediate elective classes of the Woodworking Foundations Certificate, students are expected to have some basic woodworking experience through one of the introductory classes, or prior approval from the instructor.

This class will address designing and making functional and expressive wood forms with laminations – elements made up of thin layers of wood, glued together under pressure. The class is best suited to students with some prior woodworking experience. Students will make sample laminations to learn about adhesive and bending methods, and then design and build a small furniture or sculptural work that includes a laminated element. Students will learn to design their making process as well as the piece, including the molds or jigs required to make their laminated element, and consider how technical and material challenges and constraints can inspire more creative solutions. Weekly reading assignments with written component will supplement students’ understanding of topics covered in class. Students will be expected to attend open shop (studio hours) outside of class meeting times to successfully complete their projects. They will advance their hand and power tool skills, learn specialized cutting and shaping methods, and hone their skill for wood processing and appreciation for highest and best use of materials.

This course is one of three options for completing the elective credits after finishing required core coursework for the Woodworking Foundations: Craft, Culture, and Sustainability Certificate at Evergreen.
