We invite you to join us as we sit down with student Red Bever to learn more about their experience with Individual Study at Evergreen through their internship experience during the Spring 2024 quarter. Red earned their Marine Bioresources Certificate from Evergreen in 2024. This interview was conducted by Winter Bee, Student Writer and Intern with the Internships Office. Winter Bee is denoted as WB and Red Bever is denoted as RB in this interview.

WB: What is your name?

RB: Hi! My name is Red Bever.

WB: Nice to meet you! What pronouns do you use?

RB: I use They/Them pronouns.

WB: Do you mind sharing a bit about your background and interests that led you to want to pursue the internship you participated in?

RB: I was studying environmental science with a focus on water and marine science, specifically aquatic sciences. I had experience as an assistant teacher for preschoolers for about a year, so I had been teaching before but was studying science and needed an internship for my certificate, which ended up being in teaching science.

WB: How did you learn about/become interested in the internship that you participated in?

RB: I was looking every day on the alumni site for a job position. The supervisor for the internship posted it on the alumni site, and that's how I found it.

WB: Can you share some memorable moments or highlights from your internship experience?

RB: My favorite field trip was near shore field trips to the beach. We did field trip lessons and pre-trip lessons, including coloring their own little wooden crabs to practice how to hold them before going to the beach.

WB: How was the process for registering the internship contract and who was able to help you?

RB: I filled it out on my.evergreen.com after the credits had been applied and then sent it off to someone else to fill out the certificate that I needed.

WB: Would you recommend this internship to someone else?

RB: I would 100% recommend the internship to someone else and have done so before to one of my friends!

WB: And what advice would you give to someone who has never done an internship before and is considering it?

RB: Be prepared and go for it. The paperwork side of it is a bigger initial investment and can be a little bit hard to figure out, but once you are in it, it's a really good way to get experience and is better than going to class for hands-on learning!
