Alexander Swiftwater McCarty was a qʷidiččaʔa·tx̌ (Makah) master Indigenous woodcarver, painter, printmaker, and teacher who left a legacy beyond measure at The Evergreen State College, various schools, tribal communities, and beyond. Alex earned his B.A. with an emphasis in visual arts in 2000 and a Master in Teaching degree in 2002 from Evergreen, where he went on to become a member of the faculty.

As a beloved member of the Makah Tribe, Alex’s approach to traditional art was “Learn it with care, preserve it with beauty, and pass it on."

With this spirit in mind, following his unexpected passing on March 15, 2024, Alex’s family shared a vision to establish a memorial scholarship to honor his life, legacy, and passion for supporting the next generation of students in furthering their education. The goal is to create scholarship support for students today (current use funding) while building toward an endowment that will provide support for students for generations to come.
