The Carol Minugh Gateways Scholarship Endowment was established in 2024 to honor the life and work of Evergreen faculty emerita and alumna, Dr. Carol Minugh. The scholarship supports Evergreen students with an interest in working with incarcerated youth and/or students with a personal history of incarceration.
Carol was a member of the Evergreen faculty for over 20 years and established an incredible legacy of impact as the founder of the Gateways for Incarcerated Youth Program. She also founded the Reservation-Based Program, which would evolve into what is now known as the Native Pathways Program.
Established in 1996, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth is Evergreen’s longest-standing prison education program. The program enables incarcerated students at Green Hill School (a maximum-security youth detention center) to learn alongside Evergreen students while benefitting from academic mentorship. Since the program’s inception, over 1,000 incarcerated youth have unlocked their potential for change while making academic gains in attendance and grade-level promotion. Evergreen students in the Gateways program gain experience as mentors and broaden their perspectives about transformative approaches to education.
"I am grateful that Evergreen supported the many creative ways we started students and youth in prison talking with each other so that aptitudes could flourish and college dreams could be realized. The Gateways Scholarship fund will provide more open doors for access to education for and on behalf of the incarcerated."
