Teaching at Evergreen

Faculty members team-teach in full-time, collaboratively designed and thematically-centered interdisciplinary programs, bringing together multiple disciplines. Faculty teams strive to address core academic experiences we believe should be included in all programs: writing; quantitative reasoning; deepening academic, artistic, and interpretative abilities and skills; promoting culturally diverse traditions of knowledge; creating inclusive learning environments for students and faculty members.

An integral part of Evergreen, Professional and Continuing Education creates the physical, intellectual, and emotional space for a diverse, dynamic community of learners with a focus on the returning adult learner. Faculty work collaboratively, responding to the community need for liberal arts education and personal and professional development. We welcome the adult-learner as a member of community.

We offer a full range of 2-4 credit courses for students wanting to expand on an area of knowledge , develop expertise or learn a new skill or we offer disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary 8-12 credit programs with one or more faculty.

We serve students through entry-level programs to help make the transition to Evergreen: Cornerstone, The Veteran's Next Mission and our Prior Learning from Experience (PLE) program.

The Native Pathways Program supports indigenous scholarship by offering upper-division courses focused on indigenous and tribal culture, history, governance, leadership, research, literature, and sovereignty that lead to a BA degree. The program is available in Olympia, Tacoma, Port Angeles (Peninsula Community College), Quinault (Grays Harbor Community College), and as a hybrid-program that utilizes on-line learning, as well as face-to-face. Currently, we run two AA/DTA Bridge Programs in partnership with PCC and GHCC. Quarterly course programs are offered evenings (core course) and some weekends (variable courses/credits). Native Pathways Program is inclusive of all students who have invested interest and involvement in indigenous scholarship.

In the Master of Public Administration (MPA) Program, faculty teach in our evening and weekend program, and across our three concentrations: Public & Nonprofit Administration, Public Policy, and Tribal Governance.  Each quarter, MPA faculty teach in teams for our Core courses in the MPA curriculum (Context of Public Administration; Doing Democratic Public Administration; Policy, Finance, and Budgeting for Public Administration; Analytical Techniques for Public Service; and Capstone).  Also each quarter, MPA faculty solo teach an elective course of their choosing. 

In the Master in Teaching (MiT) Program, faculty teach regularly with an interdisciplinary MiT faculty team.  MiT faculty require a professional and critical understanding of K-12 teacher education and specific expertise in teaching children in self-contained, K-6 educational settings, or teaching a content discipline in middle school and high school settings.  MiT faculty have the experience and ability to work collaboratively and across disciplines, have a strong capacity for modeling equity pedagogy in teacher education, and demonstrate a strong interest in preparing teacher candidates to address social justice and anti-bias issues in K-12 educational settings.  MiT faculty transition occasionally to our interdisciplinary undergraduate program in areas supporting teacher preparation.

In the Master of Environmental Studies (MES) Program, full-time core faculty collaborate in interdisciplinary teams to teach classes in the MES Core sequence (8-credit courses: “Conceptualizing our Regional Environment”; “Ecological and Social Sustainability”; “Research Design and Quantitative Methods”; and “Case Studies and Thesis Design”). Each course blends natural and social sciences and provides students with hands-on opportunities to gain skills crucial to work as environmental professionals. Core faculty and a diverse group of adjunct faculty also teach 4-credit graduate electives in their areas of expertise. All courses are offered in the evening or weekends to allow students who work full-time to thrive. Core faculty also advise students in the program and mentor students in thesis research and writing. MES faculty rotate occasionally into our interdisciplinary undergraduate program.
