Woodworking Special Topics: Multiples

As one of the intermediate elective classes of the Woodworking Foundations Certificate, students are expected to have some basic woodworking experience through one of the introductory classes, or prior approval from the instructor.

In this class, we will explore concepts of process design for creating repeated objects; first the object itself then process for accurately and efficiently reproducing it multiple times. Woodworkers and craftspeople often make "production runs" of items whose design and fabrication they have refined over time. Working with faculty, students will begin by creating a prototype of an item to test and refine their concept. They will then learn to design a fabrication sequence, identifying materials and requisite tools and equipment, and any supplementary patterns or jigs to expedite the creation process. Students will explore how design constraints of time and materials can inspire creative solutions. 

Weekly reading assignments with written component will supplement students’ understanding of topics covered in class. Students will be expected to attend open shop (studio hours) outside of class meeting times to successfully complete their projects. Safe and effective operation of basic hand and power equipment will be learned, with a focus on sequencing operations to expedite the production of well-made multiples.

This course is one of three options for completing required elective credits for the Woodworking Foundations: Craft, Culture, and Sustainability Certificate at Evergreen. Elective credits can be taken after completing core coursework.
