Faculty Development
Teaching and learning are fundamental to Evergreen’s mission as an experimental liberal arts college. For faculty members, this means that there is no requirement to "publish or perish"; instead, we imagine, design and teach interdisciplinary programs that respond to major questions and problems we face as humans in an ever changing world. This creative work is central to what we do.
In 2016, Evergreen launched the Learning and Teaching Commons — a teaching and learning center hosted by the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education. The Commons promotes a generative culture of interdisciplinary teaching and learning that is student-centered, equity-minded, inquiry-oriented and committed to access and excellence. We aim to promote better classroom experiences that lead to increased student learning and retention. Visit the Learning and Teaching Commons site to learn more about the programming and events offered to support Evergreen faculty.
Evergreen also supports faculty scholarship and creative work through several internal award programs. Regular full-time faculty may apply for up to $2000 of Professional Travel awards in support of conference travel in a given 2-year period; part time faculty, including adjunct faculty are also eligible for smaller, pro-rated travel awards. Regular faculty may apply for salary awards and/or resource grants through the competitive Sponsored Research program. Faculty Foundation Grants, competitive awards which provide faculty with funding to cover the costs of conducting and sharing research or completing other scholarly and creative projects, are open to all categories of faculty (including adjuncts who have a contract concurrent with or following the period of the award).
