(1) Preamble

(a) Collaborative, interdisciplinary teaching and learning constitutes the center of each library faculty member's work at Evergreen.

(b) The reappointment criteria for library faculty are as specified for all faculty in section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook except as noted below.

(2) Definitions of some terms in this policy

(a) Library faculty are adjunct library faculty, visiting library faculty, library faculty on term contract and library faculty on continuing appointment.

(b) Adjunct library faculty are adjunct faculty as defined in section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook, except that adjunct library faculty are assigned to work and teach in the library as conditions of their appointments.

(c) Visiting library faculty are visiting faculty as defined in section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook, except that visiting library faculty are assigned to work and teach in the library as conditions of their appointments.

(d) Library faculty on term contract are faculty on term contract as defined in section 4.300 the library as conditions of their appointments.

(e) Library faculty on continuing appointment are faculty on continuing appointment as defined in section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook, except that library faculty on continuing appointment are assigned to work and teach in the library as conditions of their appointments.

(f) Teaching for a library faculty member means teaching of bibliographic research, information retrieval and/or media theory and skills done as part of her or his library-based activities in support of the curriculum and her or his full-time teaching in academic programs on a periodic basis. A library faculty member on term contract and a library faculty member on continuing appointment generally teach full-time in academic programs at least one quarter out of nine, excluding summer quarters.

(3) Requirements and procedures for reappointment of library faculty

Requirements and procedures for reappointment of a library faculty member are the same as for all faculty members as described in section 4.300 of the Faculty Handbook. In addition, in order for a library faculty member on term contract to be offered an appointment as a library faculty member on continuing appointment, the library faculty member on term contract must have taught full-time for at least two quarters in an Evergreen academic program.

(4) Criteria for evaluation and reappointment of library faculty

A library faculty member, in her or his teaching, should meet the evaluation and reappointment criteria specified for all regular faculty in section 4.300 (12) of the Faculty Handbook. In addition, she or he should meet the following criteria related to and deriving from her or his work assignment in the library:

(a) Teaching. A library faculty member should support the curriculum by helping to develop students’ abilities in bibliographic research, information retrieval and/or media skills and by providing disciplinary knowledge.

(b) Meeting commitments. A library faculty member should meet her or his Evergreen commitments. Commitments that apply specifically to a library faculty member include but are not limited to:

1. Working with faculty and students in academic programs.

2. Teaching full-time one out of nine quarters in academic programs. A library faculty member on continuing appointment should teach with at least five different faculty members during every fifteen quarters, excluding summer quarters, of the teaching-equivalent of full-time teaching at Evergreen. The five teaching partners should include both library faculty and other regular faculty.

3. Affiliating with a planning unit of the curriculum and participating in faculty seminars or other faculty groups as the library dean deems acceptable.

(c) Planning curriculum. A library faculty member should contribute effectively and cooperatively to curriculum planning. The library faculty member should contribute to this planning by, among other things:

1. Planning for bibliographic, information retrieval or media instruction in the library.

2. Planning for bibliographic, information retrieval or media instruction in academic programs.

(d) Participating in college affairs. A library faculty member should participate in library governance activities and in non-library college affairs.

(e) Demonstrating professional competencies. A Library faculty member should demonstrate professional competencies in library services and library-related teaching appropriate to the faculty member’s position description.
