In this 4-week summer intensive program, students will engage in comparative study of immigrant communities, histories, and support systems in Canada and the United States through 2 weeks of preparatory work at Evergreen's Olympia campus, and a 2-week study abroad travel to British Columbia, Canada. Through lectures, workshops, field trips to community organizations in the Puget Sound area and in British Columbia, students will learn about immigrant communities, migrant workers, legal and educational support systems, and community organizations serving immigrant communities on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.

Preparatory Work in Olympia, WA:the first two weeks will consist of preparatory work at The Evergreen State College Olympia campus, and will include one week of remote and asynchronous activities and one week of in-person lectures, workshops, and field trips to community organizations in the Puget Sound area, with a focus on Latinx communities and organizations serving Latinx communities. These first two weeks in Olympia we will prepare for travel to Canada, develop introductory knowledge of the history of immigration in the Pacific Northwest, and learn about local community organizations such as the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project (NWIRP), El Centro de la Raza, and CIELO (among others). We will also engage in community-building activities through storytelling and resource-sharing practices that build on students' background and knowledge.

Study Abroad to BC, Canada: The last two weeks of the program will consist of a 10-day study abroad travel component developed in partnership with the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, BC. Students will travel as a group to Abbotsford, BC, stay in campus dorms at the University of the Fraser Valley, and engage in study of immigrant communities in Canada through local exploration, community engagement, seminar readings, and educational lectures. We will be learning about local immigrant communities, histories of migration to British Columbia, Canada's immigration systems, and local organizations supporting immigrant communities.

Academic Details

This program supports students interested in careers that involve work with immigrant and/or Latinx communities, including educational settings, the non-profit sector, law, and the service professions. Students will develop foundational knowledge of immigrant communities in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia and gain an introduction to immigration systems and immigrant support organizations in Canada and the United States, in preparation for advanced undergraduate work in the fields of International Studies, Migration Studies, Community Studies, and Latinx Studies. This program prepares students for careers in social work, community organization and development, education, law and government, and work with non-profit organizations.

$100 fee includes travel, food, and lodging costs for an overnight field trip to Seattle, WA to visit community organizations in Olympia, Tacoma, and Seattle.

This 4-week summer intensive program includes 2 weeks of preparatory work in our Olympia campus (1 week remote/asynchronous and 1 week in-person), and a 2-week study abroad travel to British Columbia in Canada. during our time in Canada, we will be based in Abbotsford, BC, and will be working in partnership with the University of Fraser Valley. During our 2-week study abroad in Canada, students will be staying in dorms at the University of Fraser Valley and will be engaged in study of local communities through field trips to local organizations, guest lectures, readings, and seminars. Travel Dates August 12-23.

Approximately $2900 in summer quarter for a 2-week study abroad in 2024.
