Interest in the U.S. nonprofit sector has steadily intensified, and it is now recognized as an important area of both study and practice. Nonprofit organizations share key elements with public and for-profit sectors; however, this course will focus on the distinct characteristics of the nonprofit sector. Some of these characteristics include its heavy reliance on volunteerism as well as the tension between funders and organizational missions.

The functioning of nonprofit organizations in the twenty-first century is a complex task. Involvement in policy-making, the pursuit of equity initiatives, and the sector's role in both the state and economy all pose significant challenges. This course will provide context to clarify students' understanding of what it is like to work, study, or collaborate in relation to nonprofit organizations today and in the future. The course will help prepare students to navigate ambiguous, complex situations in order to move us toward a more just and equitable society. Students will have the opportunity to interact with a nonprofit organization, gaining first-hand knowledge of what it means to operate and pursue social change within the nonprofit sector.

This is one of five courses that comprise the Nonprofit Administration Certificate at Evergreen.
