We invite you to join us as we sit down with student Elijah Orr '25 to learn more about his experience with Individual Study at Evergreen through his internship experiences during Spring 2024 and Fall 2024. Elijah Orr is studying Marine Science at Evergreen and plans to graduate in June 2025. This interview was conducted by Winter Bee, Student Writer and Intern with the Internships Office. Winter Bee is denoted as WB and Elijah Orr is denoted as EO in this interview.
WB: Hi Elijah! Can you introduce yourself with names and pronouns?
EO: Hi Winter! My name is Elijah Orr and my pronouns are He/Him.
WB: Awesome thank you! Let's jump into the first two questions.
Can you share a bit about your background and interests that led you to want to pursue the internship you participated in? And How did you learn about or become interested in the internship that you participated in?
EO: I was initially unsure about my career path, but I noticed The Evergreen State College's strong focus on Environmental Science, which aligned with my interest in Marine Science. In the Winter [quarter], my professor posted an unpaid internship opportunity for the Spring at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Since I needed to earn my final 8-credits, I chose this internship. As an Education Intern, I helped teach students about the refuge, its plants, and animals. It was outside my comfort zone, but I learned a lot about birds and met people with similar goals. This experience led to my current internship with the Center for Climate Action and Sustainability, and I have goals to do more in the future!
WB: Can you share some memorable moments or highlights from your internship experience?
EO: During the internship at the refuge, the children often shared funny and random insights, making the experience enjoyable. I found it rewarding when the youth connected with the learning, and at the same time they were learning from me I learned from them.
WB: How was the process for registering the internship contract and who was able to help you?
EO: The process for registering the internship contract was initially confusing for me. However, my professor who taught "Environmental Science: Waste" became my sponsor and guided me through the contract process. For the CCAS internship, the person in charge of the program became my sponsor.
WB: Would you recommend this internship to someone else?
EO: I would definitely recommend this internship to others, especially those interested in environmental science and education.
WB: What advice would you give to someone who has never done an internship before and is considering it?
EO: For someone considering their first internship, I'd say don't hesitate to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace the learning opportunities, connect with others in the field, and make the most of every experience. It's a great way to gain valuable skills and insights for your future career!
